Libyan authorities have arrested two Nigerian nationals over alleged inciting content posted on social media, according to security sources familiar with the matter.

The arrests were carried out by security operatives in Libya as part of ongoing efforts to monitor and regulate online activity considered capable of disturbing public order or inciting unrest.

Officials said the individuals were taken into custody following an investigation into posts shared on digital platforms that were allegedly deemed inflammatory. The content is reported to have circulated widely before attracting the attention of law enforcement agencies.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects, nor have they provided full details of the specific posts involved. However, security sources indicated that the case is being handled under Libya’s cybercrime and public order regulations.

The Nigerian Mission in Libya is expected to seek clarification from Libyan authorities regarding the arrests and the welfare of the detained citizens, in line with its consular responsibilities.

Libya has in recent years intensified scrutiny of social media activity, particularly posts considered to spread misinformation, encourage unrest, or undermine state authority. Foreign nationals, including migrant workers, are subject to the same legal framework.

The development has raised concern among segments of the Nigerian diaspora community in Libya, many of whom rely heavily on social media for communication and updates but remain cautious about content that could attract legal consequences.

Diplomatic sources say engagement is ongoing to ensure due process is followed and to verify the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
