Explosions, Heavy Gunfire Rock Niger’s Capital as Attack Hits Niamey Airport

Explosions and sustained gunfire echoed across Niger’s capital early Thursday after armed attackers launched an assault on the area surrounding Diori Hamani International Airport, prompting a prolonged firefight with security forces and a temporary lockdown of the strategic site.

According to witnesses and security officials, the attack began shortly before midnight and lasted for more than an hour. Residents reported hearing repeated explosions and heavy gunfire as security forces responded to the incident around the airport, which also houses an important air force base.

Security personnel quickly sealed off access roads to the airport and established a heavy military presence in the area. By Thursday morning, calm had largely returned to the city, although the airport zone remained under tight security and patrols.

Initial reports indicate that the attackers targeted military facilities located within the airport complex. Nigerien authorities later confirmed that armed assailants on motorcycles attacked an air force base inside the airport perimeter before being repelled by security forces.

State media reported that security forces killed multiple attackers and arrested several others during the operation, while a number of soldiers were injured. Authorities have not yet released a final casualty count.

Although no group immediately claimed responsibility, Niger has faced increasing attacks from jihadist organizations linked to both the Islamic State and al-Qaeda. Analysts view the airport as a high-value target because it hosts military assets and serves as a key operational hub for regional security efforts.

The assault marks the latest security challenge for Niger’s military-led government, which has struggled to contain extremist violence despite intensified military operations across the Sahel region.

The airport attack also raised concerns about the safety of critical infrastructure. Previous reports indicated that the facility serves both civilian and military functions and has strategic importance for Niger’s defense operations.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, while additional troops and security units have been deployed around the capital to prevent further attacks.
