The United Bank for Africa has dismissed as “false and malicious” reports circulating on social media alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has divorced his wife.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the bank described the claims as fabricated and designed to damage the reputation of both its chairman and the institution.

The statement, signed by the bank’s Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, Alero Ladipo, said the reports and related online content were “entirely baseless, defamatory and intentionally designed to mislead members of the public.”

UBA said the allegations form part of what it termed a “coordinated misinformation campaign” targeting its brand image and leadership.

Arrests and Investigation

The bank disclosed that the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, who have commenced investigations into the origin and spread of the claims.

According to the statement, three suspects linked to the alleged defamatory publication have been arrested. They were identified as Kingsley Akunemeihe, known online as @Directorkem; Chigozie Success Ihebom; and John Surpruchi Nwanorue, also known as @problemchimky.

UBA added that investigations are ongoing and may lead to further arrests and prosecution of other individuals involved in originating or amplifying the claims across digital platforms.

Legal Warning to Publishers

The bank issued a warning to bloggers, social media users, and platforms still circulating the reports, directing them to immediately take down the content and desist from further dissemination.

It also instructed those involved to preserve relevant digital records, including communications and metadata, ahead of possible legal proceedings.

Reaffirming its stance, the bank said it remains committed to protecting the integrity, privacy, and image of its leadership and corporate brand.

“The UBA Group will pursue all necessary legal avenues to ensure that every individual connected with this malicious campaign is identified and held accountable,” the statement added.

Elumelu, a prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist, is also the founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
