Nigeria’s opposition political landscape may be heading for a major realignment as top political figures converged in Ibadan, Oyo State, for strategic talks seen as a possible foundation for a grand coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among the prominent leaders at the high-level meeting were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Senate President David Mark, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The gathering, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, drew influential stakeholders from across various political parties, signaling growing momentum for opposition unity.

Also present were former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, former Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, elder statesman Jerry Gana, and former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, among others.

Although the meeting was officially framed as a platform for deeper cooperation among opposition leaders, political observers believe the core objective was clear—positioning for the 2027 presidential race and the possibility of forming a united opposition front.

Sources familiar with the discussions said deliberations centered on strengthening collaboration across party lines and exploring platforms such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a possible vehicle for coalition politics.

Insiders noted that while many of the leaders present may have presidential ambitions, there is increasing recognition that fragmented opposition politics has repeatedly weakened their chances against the ruling party. This realization, they said, is fueling renewed efforts to close ranks and avoid past mistakes.

Speaking during the meeting, Makinde reportedly emphasized the need to protect Nigeria’s democratic institutions, urging leaders to place national interest above partisan ambitions.

He stressed that strengthening democracy requires cooperation, dialogue, and a shared commitment to preserving political balance in the country.

As consultations continue behind closed doors, the Ibadan meeting is being viewed as a potential starting point for what could become one of the strongest opposition alliances in recent Nigerian political history, with significant implications for the 2027 elections.
