President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his scheduled trips to the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the 7th AU-EU Summit in Luanda, Angola, to address urgent domestic security matters. The decision comes as he awaits further briefings on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and a bandit attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.

In a statement, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), confirmed that Tinubu suspended his departure after being disturbed by the security breaches, including the kidnapping of 24 Kebbi schoolgirls and Monday’s assault in Kwara. The President has ordered the deployment of more military and police personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, responding to a request from the state governor, and directed the police to pursue the bandits responsible for the church attack.

Onanuga stated that Tinubu was set to leave Abuja today for the international summits but now awaits reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who conducted a sympathy visit to Kebbi on his behalf, as well as from the police and the Department of State Services regarding the Kwara incident. The President reiterated his directive to security agencies to exert all efforts in rescuing the abducted schoolgirls and ensuring their safe return home. Onanuga added that Tinubu remains focused on addressing these security challenges before proceeding with his foreign engagements.
