L-PRES, NiMet Collaborate to Boost Livestock Resilience with Advanced Weather Monitoring
The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has strengthened its collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to enhance weather monitoring and support livestock farmers in adapting to climate challenges across Nigeria.
L-PRES, a national initiative designed to improve livestock productivity and build resilience against climate-related risks, is focusing on data-driven solutions that provide farmers with timely information and resources to navigate unpredictable weather conditions.
During a courtesy visit to NiMet headquarters, the National Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Sanusi Abubakar, met with the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike. The visit culminated in the presentation of four Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) to the agency to strengthen its weather observation infrastructure.
Abubakar congratulated Anosike on the recent public presentation of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), describing NiMet as a critical partner in supporting Nigeria’s agricultural and livestock sectors. He stressed that collaboration with NiMet is key to achieving L-PRES’ mandate of improving resilience and productivity within the livestock industry.
In his response, Anosike commended L-PRES for procuring and donating the AWOS units, noting that the gesture represents a significant investment in expanding Nigeria’s meteorological observation network.
He explained that the weather stations will be installed in rehabilitated grazing reserves across the country to provide accurate and localized weather data, enabling livestock farmers to make informed decisions that can improve productivity and reduce climate-related risks.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration, noting that the partnership will leverage technology and shared expertise to protect Nigeria’s livestock sector, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and advance sustainable agricultural development nationwide.
