Millions of Americans are expected to take to the streets on Saturday in massive nationwide protests against US President Donald Trump, fueled by opposition to what critics call his authoritarian tendencies and controversial policies.

The demonstrations, organised under the grassroots movement “No Kings”, mark the third major protest in less than a year since Trump began his second term in January 2025. Organisers say more than 3,000 rallies are scheduled across major cities, suburbs, and even rural areas, including the Alaskan town of Kotzebue, above the Arctic Circle.

“The administration has dragged us deeper into war, targeted immigrant communities, and undermined civil liberties,” said Naveed Shah of Common Defense, a veterans association affiliated with the “No Kings” movement. “All of it done in the name of one man trying to rule like a king.”

The protests also respond to Trump’s recent military action in Iran, undertaken in collaboration with Israel, which critics argue has unclear goals and timelines.

Previous “No Kings” protest days drew millions nationwide. The first coincided with Trump’s 79th birthday military parade in June, while the second in October attracted an estimated seven million participants. Saturday’s rallies aim to surpass those numbers amid declining approval ratings for Trump, currently around 40 percent, and with midterm elections approaching in November.

Minnesota is expected to be a focal point, returning to the national spotlight following debates over Trump’s immigration policies. Legendary musician Bruce Springsteen, a critic of the president, is scheduled to perform in St. Paul, highlighting his ballad “Streets of Minneapolis”, written in memory of two Americans killed during protests against federal immigration enforcement.

Organisers note that two-thirds of participants live outside major cities, showing the movement’s growing reach into suburban and rural America. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, stressed the urgency: “America is at an inflection point.

People are afraid, and they can’t afford basic necessities. It’s time the administration listened and helped them build a better life rather than stoking hate and fear.”

The “No Kings” movement has evolved from a single day of defiance in 2025 into a broad, national platform resisting Trump’s policies and leadership style.
