The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Saturday as the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, claimed it has secured the backing of key party heavyweights ahead of its planned national convention.

The faction announced that former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido have aligned with its bloc, a move it says significantly strengthens its position within the party.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, dismissed reports suggesting a court order could halt the convention, insisting that the exercise would go ahead as scheduled on March 29.

“Any reports or insinuations about an injunction are things we are only seeing on social media. By the grace of God, the convention will hold as planned,” he said.

Mohammed argued that, unlike previous disputed conventions, the upcoming gathering is fully backed by law and due process.

“That gathering in Ibadan was not backed by law and was restricted by a competent court. In our case, we have the full backing of the courts, the law, and the members of the party,” he stated.

He further claimed that the faction currently commands the largest support base within the PDP, noting that several lawmakers and influential stakeholders who had previously remained neutral are now backing the group.

“Bukola Saraki, who had not initially aligned with any bloc, will be present, along with Sule Lamido and many others,” he added.

The spokesman maintained that all arrangements for the convention have been concluded in line with the party’s constitution and relevant laws, assuring members of a smooth and credible process.

“We are fully compliant, 100 percent compliant. By the grace of God, the convention will hold tomorrow,” he said.

While acknowledging existing divisions within the party, Mohammed reiterated the faction’s commitment to reconciliation but warned against attempts to derail the process.

“The party has consistently extended the hand of reconciliation, and that door remains open. However, we will not allow the progress and stability of our great party to be undermined,” he said.

The development highlights the deepening power tussle within the PDP as rival factions continue to battle for control of the party structure ahead of future elections.
