The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced plans to expand the national grid through the reconstruction and upgrade of the 138-kilometre Alaoji–Onitsha 330kV transmission line.

The project, being executed in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), involves upgrading the existing single-circuit line to a 330kV double-circuit quad-conductor system, a move expected to significantly increase transmission capacity and efficiency.

As part of the implementation process, TCN has commenced its Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), including the acquisition and clearing of the Right of Way (RoW). Compensation for Project Affected Persons (PAPs) in parts of Abia State and Imo State was carried out between March 31 and April 2, 2026, covering eight local government areas.

According to Aromeh Adole, Assistant General Manager (Health, Safety, and Environment) for the AfDB Project Implementation Unit, affected residents have been given a 90-day grace period to vacate the designated corridor following compensation.

He noted that the upgrade will deliver about four times the capacity of the current infrastructure, significantly improving bulk power transmission across the South-East.

TCN officials also confirmed that the project is expected to be completed within 18 months and will enhance electricity supply to key areas including Alaoji, Port Harcourt, and surrounding industrial and residential hubs.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to stabilise Nigeria’s power sector following repeated grid collapses earlier in 2026, largely attributed to aging infrastructure and system constraints.

The development comes on the heels of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of a ₦3.3 trillion payment plan to settle longstanding debts in the power sector, a move aimed at restoring confidence and improving liquidity across the electricity value chain.

Government officials say the upgrade will not only reduce transmission losses but also strengthen grid reliability nationwide.
