President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Nigerian soldiers following a coordinated terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh.

The attack, which targeted troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI, occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, according to confirmation from the Defence Headquarters.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Tinubu paid tribute to the troops’ bravery, noting that they fought gallantly to repel the insurgents and prevent them from overrunning nearby communities. He described the deceased soldiers as “unforgettable and irreplaceable heroes” whose sacrifices would not be forgotten.

Among those lost in the attack was Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, whom the President acknowledged as having made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Despite the tragic incident, Tinubu maintained that Nigerian forces have continued to record significant gains against insurgents through sustained land and air offensives. He characterized the latest assault as a “desperate counterattack” by weakened terrorist elements.

The President urged military personnel across all theatres of operation not to lose morale, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their duty to protect the nation.

“Do not lose heart, do not be weary, do not be discouraged,” Tinubu said, assuring troops of the government’s continued support in terms of equipment provision and welfare.

He also called on Nigerians and the media to stand firmly behind the Armed Forces, stressing the importance of national unity in the fight against terrorism and banditry. He cautioned against any actions or narratives that might appear to celebrate or legitimize attacks on military personnel.
