Eric Swalwell, a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives has announced plans to resign following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, intensifying a political crisis that has drawn bipartisan pressure for his exit.

The California lawmaker said he would step down to avoid becoming a distraction to his constituents, even as he continues to deny some of the most serious accusations against him.

The allegations, made by at least four women, include claims of sexual assault, harassment, and inappropriate conduct. One former staffer accused Swalwell of sexual assault, while others alleged behaviours ranging from unsolicited explicit messages to non-consensual contact.

In a public statement, Swalwell acknowledged “mistakes in judgment” but maintained that some accusations were false and pledged to fight them legally. However, he noted that remaining in office while facing such scrutiny would hinder his ability to serve effectively.

The controversy triggered a formal investigation by the House Ethics Committee and led to growing calls from both Democrats and Republicans for his resignation or possible expulsion.

The scandal has also disrupted Swalwell’s political ambitions beyond Congress. He recently suspended his campaign for governor of California as pressure mounted over the allegations.

His resignation is not expected to significantly alter the balance of power in the House, as his district is considered safely Democratic and will likely remain under the party’s control in a special election.

Swalwell’s case adds to a growing list of ethics controversies in Congress, renewing debates about accountability and conduct among elected officials.
