French Soldier Killed, Others Wounded in Lebanon Peacekeeping Mission Attack
A French soldier serving with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon has been killed in an attack on international forces, according to French and UN officials.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the soldier was part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which has been deployed in the region to maintain stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.
The attack reportedly occurred near a village in southern Lebanon while peacekeepers were carrying out operational duties, including efforts to secure routes and clear explosive threats. The soldier was killed during the assault, while at least three others were injured, some seriously, and later evacuated for treatment.
Initial reports from French authorities suggest the нападение may have involved small-arms fire in what officials described as an ambush. France has pointed to the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah as being likely responsible, although the group has denied any involvement and called for a full investigation.
President Macron condemned the incident as an “unacceptable attack” and urged Lebanese authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible. Lebanese leaders, including the president and prime minister, have also denounced the violence and announced investigations into the incident.
The killing comes amid heightened tensions in southern Lebanon, where clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters have intensified in recent weeks. Despite a fragile ceasefire aimed at reducing hostilities, the region remains volatile, with peacekeeping troops frequently caught in the crossfire.
The United Nations has reiterated calls for restraint and emphasized the importance of protecting peacekeepers operating in conflict zones, warning that attacks on UN personnel constitute serious violations of international law.
