Canadian Killed, Dozens Injured in Rare Attack at Mexican Pyramids
A gunman opened fire on tourists at the ancient Teotihuacán pyramids near Mexico City, killing a Canadian national and injuring several others in a rare attack at one of the country’s most visited cultural landmarks.

According to authorities, the shooting occurred on Monday at the Pyramid of the Moon within the historic complex, where the attacker climbed to an elevated position before opening fire on visitors below.

At least one Canadian tourist was killed, while more than a dozen others sustained injuries, including nationals from the United States, Colombia, Brazil, and Russia.
Officials identified the suspect as a Mexican national who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. Witnesses described a chaotic situation as gunshots rang out, sending tourists scrambling for safety, with some injured during the stampede that followed.
Emergency responders and bystanders rushed to assist victims, administering first aid before ambulances arrived. Several of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with some suffering gunshot wounds while others were hurt attempting to flee.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the victims and their families, describing the incident as deeply distressing and pledging a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The Teotihuacán site, a UNESCO World Heritage location, attracts millions of visitors annually and is considered one of Mexico’s most important pre-Hispanic cultural centers. Violence at such major tourist destinations is considered rare, raising fresh concerns about security as the country prepares to host global events in the near future.
Authorities have since closed the site temporarily while investigations continue.
