A planned fight between teenagers in the United States turned deadly after it escalated into a shooting at a public park in North Carolina, leaving two people dead and five others injured.

The incident occurred on Monday morning at Leinbach Park in Winston-Salem, where authorities say groups of young people had arranged to meet for a fight before the situation spiralled out of control. According to police, gunfire broke out around 10 a.m., with multiple individuals reportedly opening fire during the chaos.

Two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, were pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining gunshot wounds. Five other victims, aged between 14 and 19, were also shot, with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

Authorities revealed that more people were present at the park than those injured, suggesting the gathering involved a larger group of youths. Investigators also believe that some of the individuals wounded may have been involved in the exchange of gunfire.

Police confirmed that multiple shooters were involved, but no arrests had been made as of the latest update. The motive behind the planned fight remains unclear.

The shooting prompted temporary lockdowns at nearby schools, including Jefferson Middle School and Mount Tabor High School, as a precaution. Both schools were later declared safe and resumed normal activities.

Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn expressed frustration over the incident, describing it as senseless and preventable, while urging the community to play a more active role in monitoring youth behaviour and preventing violence.

The tragedy has once again raised concerns about youth violence and access to firearms in the United States, particularly in situations where disputes among teenagers escalate rapidly into deadly confrontations.
