Tensions Rise as US, Iran Yet to Confirm Talks Before Ceasefire Ends

Uncertainty is mounting over potential peace talks between the United States and Iran as a fragile ceasefire between both nations’ edges closer to its expiration.

The two-week truce, brokered earlier this month following weeks of intense conflict, is set to lapse within days, with both sides warning that fighting could resume if no agreement is reached. Despite initial plans for a second round of negotiations in Islamabad, neither side has fully confirmed participation, casting doubt over the prospects for diplomacy.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance, expected to lead the American delegation, has yet to depart for the talks, while Iranian officials have signalled hesitation, citing what they describe as “unacceptable actions” by Washington.

Tensions have escalated in recent days following the U.S. military operations targeting Iranian-linked vessels, including the seizure of ships in strategic waters. Iran has condemned the actions as violations of the ceasefire and warned of possible retaliation, further complicating already fragile negotiations.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated he is unwilling to extend the ceasefire, increasing pressure on both sides to reach a deal quickly. He has also warned of renewed military action if talks collapse, raising fears of a return to open conflict.

Iran, for its part, has maintained a firm stance on key issues, including its nuclear program and regional influence, signalling it may not be willing to make major concessions under pressure.

The situation has also had wider global implications. Disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz; a critical oil shipping route, have already impacted energy markets, driving up prices and heightening economic concerns worldwide.

Pakistan, acting as a mediator, continues to push for dialogue and has made security arrangements in Islamabad in anticipation of the talks. However, with no clear commitment from Tehran and delays on the U.S. side, the chances of a breakthrough remain uncertain.
