HURIWA Raises Alarm Over Political Violence in Imo, Demands Federal Intervention
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the rising wave of political violence and alleged suppression of opposition activities in Ideato North and Ideato South Local Government Areas of Imo State, warning that the situation poses a serious threat to democratic governance.
In a press statement issued on April 29, 2026, the group described the developments as a “dangerous descent into lawlessness,” alleging that opposition supporters are being targeted through intimidation, harassment, and violent attacks.
HURIWA specifically raised concerns over reports involving supporters of a political movement linked to Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives. According to the group, these supporters have allegedly faced repeated attacks by armed individuals said to be operating under the guise of vigilante groups.
The organization further alleged that political gatherings have been disrupted, with claims that thugs were deployed to seize venues, destroy property, and prevent lawful assemblies.
Calling on Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, to act decisively, HURIWA urged him to uphold his constitutional responsibility to protect the rights and security of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
“The government must not allow a system where dissent is criminalized and opposition voices are silenced through violence,” the statement said.
HURIWA emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees citizens the rights to freedom of association, peaceful assembly, and participation in governance, stressing that these rights are fundamental and cannot be suppressed.
The group also warned that the state government would be held accountable if the situation deteriorates further, noting that the governor, as Chief Security Officer of the state, bears responsibility for maintaining law and order.
In addition, HURIWA highlighted concerns raised by Amnesty International over alleged human rights abuses at the “Tiger Base,” an anti-kidnapping unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Owerri.
The report cited allegations including arbitrary detention, torture, extortion, enforced disappearances, and inhumane detention conditions.
Describing the claims as “deeply disturbing,” HURIWA called for an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation, as well as the prosecution of any officers found culpable.
The group urged key federal authorities, including the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Minister of Defence, to intervene urgently to restore order and protect citizens’ rights.
HURIWA further called for:
An immediate end to political violence and intimidation
Protection of lawful political gatherings
Withdrawal of armed groups from political activities
Prosecution of perpetrators of violence
A full investigation into alleged abuses at Tiger Base
The organization warned that Nigeria’s democracy must not be undermined by violence and repression, stressing that political competition should be guided by the rule of law, tolerance, and accountability.
