Tinubu Endorses Hamzat as Lagos APC Consensus Governorship Candidate for 2027

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally endorsed Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos governorship election.

The endorsement came during a meeting at the State House, Abuja, with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council (GAC), led by Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, alongside Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga disclosed the development in a statement, saying the President formally backed Hamzat as the party’s preferred candidate following the earlier decision of the GAC to adopt him for the race.

“President Tinubu formally endorses the Lagos APC consensus governorship candidate Obafemi Hamzat at a meeting with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council, led by Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” Onanuga stated.

The endorsement followed the unanimous adoption of Hamzat by the GAC, the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos State, which had earlier endorsed him as the party’s consensus governorship aspirant ahead of the 2027 election.

Speaking after the meeting, Hamzat expressed gratitude to the party elders and President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him.

According to him, the GAC leaders presented him to the President and received his blessing for their decision to support his candidature.

“These are fathers, they are leaders, they’ve seen a lot of Christmases, they’ve seen a lot of Eid El Kabir, so they have experience, and therefore I’m really, really excited that they brought me here to meet Mr President, and Mr President has blessed us and blessed the decision of GAC,” Hamzat said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu had earlier thrown his weight behind his deputy’s governorship ambition, while the GAC also announced plans to purchase Hamzat’s nomination form as a demonstration of full support.

The development further strengthens Hamzat’s position as the leading APC contender to succeed Sanwo-Olu in the 2027 governorship election, signaling early political alignment within the Lagos ruling party.
