Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has approved the commencement of technical processes aimed at restoring 20 court-ordered suppressed state constituencies across the country.

According to an official communication from the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja dated April 30, 2026, the affected constituencies are spread across Kogi State (11), Benue State (5), Delta State (4), and Jigawa State (1).

The Commission stated that the decision was reached during its meeting on the same day, marking a significant step toward complying with court directives and strengthening electoral representation in the affected areas.

INEC explained that the exercise will involve stakeholder engagement at state headquarters and extensive fieldwork within the constituencies. The process is expected to generate critical geographical and demographic data required for the production and validation of constituency maps and other technical documents.

To ensure a smooth operation, Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in the affected states have been directed to collaborate with key stakeholders, including traditional institutions, community leaders, and security agencies.

They are also expected to provide administrative and logistical support to field teams, guarantee adequate security for personnel and equipment, and nominate qualified state officers to work alongside technical teams from INEC headquarters.

The Commission emphasized that the coordinated effort is essential to delivering credible outcomes and ensuring the successful restoration of the constituencies.
