A grieving community in Shreveport gathered over the weekend to honour eight children killed in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent United States history.

The emotional funeral service was held at Summer Grove Baptist Church, where hundreds of mourners, faith leaders and public officials paid tribute to the young victims, aged between three and 11 years old. The children were remembered with white caskets adorned with flowers and gold crowns as relatives struggled to cope with the devastating loss.

According to authorities, the children were killed during a domestic violence-related shooting that occurred on April 19 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Seven of the victims were siblings, while the eighth child was their cousin. Investigators said the alleged gunman, identified as Shamar Elkins, later died following a confrontation with police after the attack.

During the funeral, pastors and community leaders called for unity and healing amid growing concerns about gun violence and domestic abuse in the United States. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honour of the children, describing them as “lights in their homes and schools.”

Mourners dressed in shades of pink, blue and purple filled the church as gospel songs and prayers echoed through the service. The children, now being referred to by some community members as “The Eternal Eight,” were remembered for their innocence, joy and bright futures.

The tragedy has renewed conversations across the country about domestic violence, mental health and illegal access to firearms. Federal investigators have reportedly charged two men accused of unlawfully supplying weapons connected to the shooting.
