A California man accused of attempting to assassinate United States President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to multiple federal charges linked to an alleged attack during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, appeared before a federal court on Monday where his legal team entered a not guilty plea on charges including attempted assassination of the president, assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon, and firearms-related offences.

According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on April 25 during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where President Trump and several senior administration officials were attending the high-profile event. Authorities alleged that Allen breached a security checkpoint while carrying weapons and opened fire, striking a Secret Service agent in a ballistic vest before he was subdued by security personnel.

Investigators said Allen had reportedly travelled from California to Washington by train and checked into the hotel before the alleged attack. Law enforcement officials also claimed to have recovered writings and online posts suggesting hostility toward the Trump administration.

Court documents revealed that Allen’s defence lawyers are seeking the removal of some Justice Department officials from the prosecution team, arguing that certain officials who attended the dinner could be considered potential victims in the case. Prosecutors have been ordered to respond to the request later this month.

If convicted on the attempted assassination charge, Allen could face life imprisonment. He remains in federal custody pending further court proceedings.
