NATO Vows to Defend Territory After Russian Drone Strike in Romania
NATO members have strongly condemned Russia after a drone crashed into a residential apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people and raising fresh concerns about the Ukraine war spilling into alliance territory.
Romanian authorities said the explosive-laden drone entered the country’s airspace during a large-scale Russian attack on nearby Ukrainian targets overnight before striking a 10-story apartment block in the city of Galați, close to the Ukrainian border. A woman and a child suffered minor injuries, while the impact triggered a fire and caused significant damage to the building’s roof and upper floors.
Romania’s Ministry of Defence stated that radar systems tracked the drone after it crossed into Romanian territory shortly before 2 a.m. Two F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter were deployed, but officials said the low-flying drone could not be intercepted before it crashed into the residential building.
The incident drew swift reactions from NATO and European leaders. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the strike as reckless and reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to collective defense, declaring that NATO would defend “every inch” of its territory. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker also condemned the incident as a “reckless incursion.”
Romania’s Foreign Ministry described the drone strike as a serious violation of international law and summoned Russian diplomats for explanations. Bucharest is also urging NATO allies to accelerate the deployment of anti-drone systems and strengthen air-defense capabilities along the alliance’s eastern flank.
The strike is being regarded as the most serious Russian drone incident to affect Romania since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Romanian officials said the country has recorded dozens of airspace violations and repeated discoveries of drone fragments near its border over the past four years, but this marks the first time civilians have been injured inside a populated area of a NATO member state.
Moscow has disputed responsibility for the incident. Former Russian President and Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev questioned the drone’s origin and accused European governments of escalating tensions through their support for Ukraine. He also warned that similar incidents could occur in the future as the conflict continues.
The drone strike has intensified fears that Russia’s war against Ukraine could increasingly affect neighboring NATO countries, prompting renewed discussions within the alliance about air-defense readiness and deterrence measures along Europe’s eastern borders.
