President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on Nigerians to actively support government efforts to combat insecurity, saying the country’s security challenges require collective responsibility and national unity.

In a message marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration, Akpabio commended the resilience of Nigerians and the progress made in sustaining democratic governance since the country’s return to civilian rule. He stressed that democracy thrives when citizens participate actively in nation-building and support efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.

The Senate President expressed concern over the persistent threats posed by terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality, urging citizens to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could help prevent attacks and apprehend criminals.

According to him, security is not solely the responsibility of government and law enforcement agencies but requires the involvement of communities, traditional institutions, civil society groups, and individual citizens.

Akpabio also urged Nigerians to remain committed to the values of democracy, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, noting that national development can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace and stability.

He praised the sacrifices of security personnel serving across the country and reiterated the commitment of the National Assembly to supporting policies and legislation aimed at strengthening national security and promoting economic growth.

The Democracy Day message comes amid renewed concerns over insecurity in several parts of the country, with government officials continuing to call for greater public participation in intelligence gathering and community-based security initiatives.

Akpabio further encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and work together towards a more secure, united, and prosperous country.
