Trump Allies Explore New Route to Compensate Alleged ‘Weaponization’ Victims

Allies of U.S. President Donald Trump are reportedly pursuing an alternative legal strategy to compensate individuals they describe as victims of government “weaponization” after a controversial proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund was effectively abandoned amid political and legal opposition.

The original “Anti-Weaponization Fund” was designed to provide financial compensation to people who claimed they had been unfairly targeted by federal investigations and prosecutions during former President Joe Biden’s administration. Critics, however, argued that the fund could have benefited some participants in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and described it as an inappropriate use of taxpayer money.

With the fund now effectively shelved, Trump allies are turning their attention to the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), a law that allows individuals to seek compensation from the federal government for alleged wrongdoing by government employees or agencies. Legal experts say the law could provide a pathway for settlements without requiring the creation of a separate compensation fund.

Hundreds of individuals connected to the January 6 Capitol riot have reportedly filed administrative claims under the FTCA, while several have already initiated lawsuits seeking damages from the federal government. Attorneys representing some of the claimants argue that their clients suffered wrongful treatment during investigations and prosecutions.

The White House has stated that there are currently no new announcements regarding compensation plans, while maintaining that President Trump remains committed to addressing what he considers politically motivated actions taken against his supporters during the previous administration.

The issue remains highly controversial. Supporters argue that individuals who were unfairly targeted deserve restitution, while critics contend that compensating people involved in politically charged investigations; particularly those linked to the Capitol riot, could undermine public confidence in the justice system and place an additional burden on taxpayers.

The debate is expected to continue as more claims move through the legal system and as courts examine the scope of the government’s liability under existing federal law.
