No fewer than 19 farmers have been killed and at least 12 others injured following a fresh attack by suspected bandits in Gora Namaye District of Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Residents said the attackers, who reportedly arrived on motorcycles in large numbers, stormed farming communities and opened fire indiscriminately on people working on their farmlands.

The councillor representing Faru/Magami Ward, Bello Hussaini, confirmed the incident, stating that 18 farmers were killed instantly during the attack, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

According to him, one of the injured victims later died while receiving treatment at a hospital, bringing the total death toll to 19.

“The bandits came in large numbers on motorcycles and started shooting sporadically at farmers. Eighteen people were killed on the spot, while many others were injured,” Hussaini said.

Witnesses said the attackers left several victims lying in pools of blood across the farmlands before fleeing the area.

The latest attack has heightened fears among residents of Maradun and surrounding communities, where recurring incidents of banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on farmers have continued to threaten livelihoods and food production.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Zamfara State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued parts of Zamfara State, one of the states most affected by armed banditry in northwestern Nigeria.

Local residents have renewed calls for stronger security measures and increased deployment of security personnel to vulnerable rural communities to protect farmers and prevent further attacks.
