Political Alliance Deepens as Gwarzo Names Kwankwaso’s Son Running Mate
The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement was made on Monday and is being viewed by political observers as a significant development within the Kwankwasiyya political movement, which remains one of the most influential political forces in Kano State. Mustapha Kwankwaso’s emergence further strengthens the alliance between Gwarzo and the political structure led by his father.
Gwarzo, a former deputy governor of Kano State and longtime associate of Rabiu Kwankwaso, was recently unveiled as the NDC’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election. His nomination was endorsed by Kwankwaso after consultations with party stakeholders.
Political analysts say the choice of Mustapha Kwankwaso is likely aimed at consolidating support among Kwankwasiyya loyalists across Kano and reinforcing the movement’s influence ahead of the election. The younger Kwankwaso is expected to play a key role in mobilizing youth and grassroots supporters during the campaign.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments in Kano State, where several prominent politicians have switched parties ahead of the 2027 elections. Gwarzo himself recently left his position as deputy governor and later aligned with opposition forces associated with Kwankwaso.
Supporters of the ticket argue that the combination of Gwarzo’s administrative experience and the Kwankwaso family’s political influence could make the NDC a formidable contender in the state. Critics, however, have questioned whether the selection reflects political succession within the movement rather than a broader search for leadership alternatives.
Neither Gwarzo nor Mustapha Kwankwaso has publicly outlined the full details of their campaign agenda, but party officials say the ticket will focus on governance reforms, economic development, education, and youth empowerment.
The announcement is expected to intensify political activity in Kano as parties continue to position themselves for what is shaping up to be one of Nigeria’s most closely watched governorship contests.
