The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general election.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, following what he described as extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from across the country’s geopolitical zones.

According to the statement, Amaechi’s emergence followed the conclusion of the ADC presidential primaries, where he reportedly finished as runner-up and garnered significant support from party members nationwide.

The party said the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents a strategic alliance aimed at providing experienced leadership capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.

“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations and political traditions,” the statement said.

The ADC highlighted Amaechi’s extensive political career, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later Minister of Transportation.

According to the party, Amaechi’s experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government, coupled with his political influence in the South-South and other parts of the country, would strengthen the party’s electoral prospects.

The party further argued that the partnership would boost its growing coalition and provide Nigerians with what it described as a credible alternative ahead of the next general election.

The ADC said the ticket reflects its commitment to national unity, economic revival, job creation and improved security, adding that it is prepared to offer a new direction for the country.

Calling for broader support, the party urged members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups, women leaders and other stakeholders to rally behind the ticket as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.

The announcement is expected to generate significant political interest as parties and coalitions continue to position themselves ahead of what is shaping up to be a highly competitive presidential contest.
