Ronaldo Sets New World Cup Record as Portugal Drop Points Against DR Congo
Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name into FIFA World Cup history on Wednesday, becoming the oldest outfield player ever to start a World Cup match at 41 years and 132 days old as Portugal opened their 2026 campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
However, the landmark occasion ended in disappointment for Portugal as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient DR Congo side in their Group K opener.
Ronaldo, appearing in a record sixth World Cup, broke the previous mark held by Canada’s Atiba Hutchinson, who was 39 years and 292 days old when he featured at the 2022 tournament. The Portuguese captain also earned his 229th international appearance, further extending his remarkable international career.
Portugal made a dream start when midfielder Joao Neves headed home in the sixth minute to give the European side an early advantage. Portugal dominated possession and created several chances but struggled to add to their lead against a disciplined Congolese defense.
DR Congo, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, showed determination throughout the contest and were rewarded deep into first-half stoppage time when Yoane Wissa rose unmarked to head in an equalizer from a corner kick.
Despite introducing attacking reinforcements in the second half, Portugal were unable to find a winner as DR Congo held firm to secure a memorable point on their return to the world’s biggest football stage.
The result leaves Group K finely balanced, with Portugal missing an opportunity to take an early lead in the standings while DR Congo celebrate one of the biggest results in their recent football history.
