The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has thrown its weight behind the House of Representatives Minority Caucus’ call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to demonstrate stronger leadership in tackling Nigeria’s challenges or consider resigning from office.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the opposition coalition said it fully endorsed the position of the Minority Caucus, arguing that the current administration must urgently address worsening insecurity, economic hardship and the declining welfare of Nigerians.

The statement was signed by Chief Peter Ameh, Acting National Chairman of the Conference of United Political Parties.

According to the coalition, leadership should be measured by the ability to improve the lives of citizens and not merely by occupying public office.

“CUPP fully aligns with this view and believes that the current administration must rise to the challenges facing Nigerians or make way for leaders who can deliver meaningful results,” the statement said.

The opposition group maintained that public officials who fail to provide effective governance should be prepared to take responsibility for their performance.

“In a sane clime, any elected official who refuses to produce results of good governance that will help make the lives of the people better should honourably resign,” Ameh stated.

The coalition said President Tinubu’s administration must urgently intensify efforts to tackle insecurity, stabilise the economy and improve living conditions for citizens struggling with rising costs and economic uncertainty.

It stressed that political leadership is a responsibility that must be exercised in the interest of the people and not treated as an entitlement.

“President Bola Tinubu and his administration must step up immediately to address the pressing issues of insecurity, economic hardship and the general wellbeing of Nigerians. Leadership is not a right but a responsibility. Where this responsibility is not being discharged effectively, the honourable path is resignation,” the statement added.

CUPP reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good governance, accountability and democratic principles, saying it would continue to monitor developments in the country and speak out on issues affecting Nigerians.

The coalition urged the President to take immediate and visible steps to ease the hardship faced by citizens and restore public confidence in government policies and programmes.

The statement comes amid growing political debate over the state of the economy, insecurity and the effectiveness of ongoing reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.
