Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, one of the most prominent surviving figures of the Cuban Revolution and a longtime ally of former leader Fidel Castro, has died at the age of 92, Cuban state media reported.

Valdés was widely regarded as a key architect of Cuba’s revolutionary government and held several of the most powerful security and political positions in the country for decades following the 1959 revolution that brought Castro to power.

A founding member of the revolutionary movement, Valdés played a significant role in the guerrilla struggle against the government of Fulgencio Batista. After the revolution’s success, he became deeply involved in shaping Cuba’s internal security and intelligence structures, earning a reputation as one of the most influential figures in the early years of the new government.

Over the decades, Valdés held multiple senior positions, including leadership roles in the Interior Ministry, where he oversaw state security operations. He later served in various ministerial and vice-presidential capacities, remaining a trusted figure within Cuba’s political elite well into the 21st century.

State media described him as a loyal revolutionary who remained committed to the principles of the Cuban socialist system throughout his life. His death marks the passing of one of the last surviving members of the original revolutionary leadership circle that included Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.

While Valdés was celebrated in official Cuban narratives as a defender of the revolution, he was also a controversial figure internationally due to his association with the country’s security apparatus during periods marked by political repression.

Tributes from Cuban officials highlighted his decades of service and his role in maintaining the revolutionary state. Details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the government in the coming days.
