Seven Killed, Dozens Injured in Wave of Weekend Shootings in Chicago
At least seven people were killed and dozens more injured in a series of shootings across Chicago over the weekend, in what authorities describe as one of the city’s most violent short-term spikes this year.
Police said the shootings occurred in multiple neighborhoods between Friday night and Sunday evening, with victims ranging in age and several incidents believed to be unrelated but part of a broader pattern of gun violence affecting the city.
The Chicago Police Department confirmed that emergency responders were dispatched to numerous scenes involving gunfire, including street gatherings, residential areas, and commercial districts.
Authorities reported that at least 30 people sustained gunshot wounds, some critically, while hospitals across the city activated emergency response protocols to handle the influx of victims.
Investigators are working to determine whether any of the shootings are connected or stem from organized activity, though early assessments suggest most incidents were isolated disputes that escalated into violence.
Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the violence, calling it “unacceptable” and urging community cooperation with law enforcement efforts. He said the city would be increasing patrols in affected areas and expanding intervention programs aimed at reducing gun-related incidents.
Community leaders have renewed calls for stronger gun control measures, improved social services, and investment in youth outreach programs as Chicago continues to grapple with recurring cycles of violence.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is also reportedly monitoring some of the incidents, particularly those involving possible interstate connections or organized criminal networks.
Hospitals across Chicago remain on alert as several victims remain in critical condition, and officials warned that the death toll could rise in the coming days.
Law enforcement agencies are urging residents with information or footage related to the shootings to come forward as investigations continue.
