A woman has died and a young child has been left in critical condition following a devastating collision between a car and a truck in County Cavan, Ireland, prompting a major emergency response and a police investigation into the cause of the crash.

The collision occurred on the R162 at Corclare, near Shercock, shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Friday. According to An Garda Síochána, the woman, believed to be in her 50s, was driving the car when it collided with a truck. She suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency responders.

A juvenile female passenger in the car sustained life-threatening injuries and was initially treated at the scene before being transferred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin, where she remains in critical condition.

Emergency services, including firefighters, paramedics and Garda officers, responded quickly to the scene. Several other people from both vehicles were assessed and treated by medical personnel, although no additional serious injuries were reported.

Following the crash, the R162 was closed for several hours to allow Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to examine the scene and gather evidence. Officers carried out a detailed forensic survey to establish the circumstances that led to the collision.

Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash or was travelling on the R162 between 4:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in obtaining dashcam footage that may help reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.

Road safety advocates say the tragedy serves as another reminder of the dangers on rural roads, where high-speed collisions involving heavy vehicles often result in severe injuries or fatalities. Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits and remain alert, particularly on regional roads.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially released, pending notification of her family. Local communities have expressed sympathy for those affected, while the child continues to receive specialist treatment in hospital.

Investigators are expected to examine factors including road conditions, vehicle movements and witness testimony before determining the cause of the fatal crash. The findings will form part of an official report into one of the region’s latest serious road traffic incidents.
