At least 12 people were injured, including 11 who suffered gunshot wounds, after a shooting near Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, Florida, United States, during the university’s homecoming weekend on Saturday night.

Authorities said six adults and six juveniles were among those injured. At least three victims sustained serious injuries, while nine others were reported to be in stable condition, according to the Tallahassee Police Department.

The shooting occurred along Perry Street near Bragg Memorial Stadium shortly before 8 p.m. local time, as crowds gathered in the area following a football game and homecoming activities.

Police said preliminary findings indicated that a physical altercation preceded the gunfire. However, investigators had not established the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation or identified a motive.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell expressed concern over the number of young people caught up in the incident, describing it as particularly distressing that children were among the injured. Reports by US media identified the youngest shooting victim as 11 years old.

Authorities said no arrests had been made as of the initial reports, while the police department’s violent crimes unit continued investigating the incident and searching for those responsible.

The shooting prompted a safety alert from Florida A&M University, which urged people near Bragg Memorial Stadium and Perry Street to avoid the area while officers responded. The university said the incident occurred near its campus and maintained that the safety and security of students, staff and faculty remained a priority.

Witness accounts described panic as people fled after hearing gunshots. The incident occurred during one of the university’s busiest weekends, when students, alumni and visitors had gathered for homecoming celebrations.

The attack has renewed concerns about gun violence at public gatherings in the United States, particularly incidents that put children and bystanders at risk. Investigators have yet to establish whether the shooting was directly connected to the university’s homecoming activities or was an altercation between individuals that escalated in a crowded area.

Police have appealed for information that could help establish what happened and identify those involved. Further details about the victims and any arrests were not immediately available in the initial reports.
