At least 30 people have been killed after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain, prompting a major emergency response and the suspension of rail services connecting Madrid with the country’s southern Andalusia region.

The crash occurred on Wednesday morning, October 28, near Urda in the province of Toledo, when a high-speed train struck the rear of another train travelling towards Seville. Spanish regional authorities confirmed that the death toll had risen from an initial estimate of 10, while numerous passengers were reported injured.

The collision involved trains operated by Spain’s state-owned Renfe and private rail company Iryo. Reports said two carriages derailed, with wreckage scattered down an embankment beside the railway line. The precise circumstances leading to the crash remained unclear as emergency teams continued rescue and recovery operations.

Firefighters, medical personnel, Civil Protection teams and other emergency responders were deployed to the scene. Hospitals were receiving injured passengers, while local authorities were also arranging assistance for people affected by the collision.

The crash forced the suspension of high-speed rail traffic along the Madrid-Andalusia route, disrupting services between the capital and destinations in southern Spain. Rail infrastructure manager Adif confirmed that services had been halted following the collision.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed shock over the accident and said he was in contact with officials as emergency services worked at the scene. He also offered his condolences and support to the victims and their families.

The disaster has renewed concerns about rail safety in Spain, which suffered another deadly high-speed train collision in January 2026 near Adamuz in Córdoba province. That accident killed 46 people after a train derailed and collided with an oncoming service, prompting debate about railway maintenance and infrastructure investment.

Authorities are investigating the latest collision to establish what happened. The death toll and number of injured passengers could change as rescue work continues and officials obtain a clearer account of the casualties.
