At least nine people, including two children, have been killed after a freight train collided with a passenger bus in Zimbabwe, according to police and railway authorities.

The tragic accident occurred at a railway crossing in the town of Gwanda, located in Matabeleland South Province, where a freight train operated by the National Railways of Zimbabwe struck a bus carrying passengers.

Authorities said several other people were injured in the collision and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency responders, police officers, and railway officials quickly arrived at the scene to assist victims and begin investigations into the cause of the crash.

Police confirmed that among the dead were two children, while a number of survivors sustained varying degrees of injuries. The full extent of the casualties is still being assessed as rescue and recovery operations continue.

Witnesses described scenes of devastation, with parts of the bus severely damaged by the impact. Images from the scene showed emergency personnel working through wreckage as concerned residents gathered nearby.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe expressed condolences to the families of the victims and pledged full cooperation with investigators. Officials said preliminary inquiries would examine whether mechanical failure, human error, visibility issues, or crossing safety measures contributed to the accident.

Road and rail accidents remain a significant concern in Zimbabwe, where aging infrastructure and limited safety measures at some crossings have been cited as recurring challenges. Safety advocates have repeatedly called for improved warning systems, better road signage, and enhanced enforcement around railway crossings.

Government officials have also conveyed their sympathies to the affected families, while urging motorists and transport operators to exercise caution when approaching rail crossings.
