DRUG ABUSE FUELS KIDNAPPING & SOCIAL VICES!!! Join Efforts to Save Our Students and Youths
By Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu
Drug abuse has become one of the greatest threats confronting Nigerian youths today. Beyond destroying the health and future of young people, substance abuse has emerged as a major driver of criminal activities, including kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, cybercrime, sexual violence, and other social vices that undermine peace and national development.
Across communities and educational institutions, many young people are falling victim to the destructive influence of illicit drugs and substance addiction. What often begins as experimentation or peer pressure gradually evolves into dependency, poor judgment, violent behavior, and criminal conduct. Numerous studies and law enforcement reports have shown a strong connection between drug abuse and criminal activities, as individuals under the influence of drugs are more likely to engage in acts that threaten public safety and security.
The rising cases of kidnapping in parts of the country have further highlighted the urgent need to address the root causes of crime among youths. Drug addiction often fuels desperation, recklessness, and a disregard for human life, creating conditions that encourage involvement in criminal networks and organized social vices.
Our secondary schools, colleges, polytechnics, and universities must remain centers of learning, innovation, and character development—not recruitment grounds for drug abuse, cultism, and criminal activities. Every stakeholder has a role to play in protecting our students and safeguarding the future of Nigeria.
Parents must pay closer attention to their children’s activities and associations. Educational institutions must strengthen counseling services and awareness programmes. Religious and community leaders must continue to promote moral values and positive lifestyles. Government agencies, security institutions, and civil society organizations must work together to prevent drug abuse and rehabilitate affected youths.
Most importantly, students and young people must understand that drugs do not solve problems; they create them. True success comes through education, hard work, discipline, innovation, and responsible living. Every young Nigerian has the potential to become a leader, entrepreneur, professional, or nation-builder, but that potential can only be realized by making the right choices.
The fight against drug abuse is not the responsibility of government alone. It is a collective duty that requires the commitment of families, schools, communities, and the youths themselves.
Let us rise together to protect our campuses, secure our communities, and preserve the future of our nation.
