Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, coming from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the knockout rounds as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Facing a must-win scenario in their final Group E match, Ecuador showed remarkable resilience against a German side that had already secured qualification for the Round of 32. The South Americans recovered from an early setback to claim a famous victory and keep their World Cup campaign alive.

Germany made a dream start when winger Leroy Sané found the net just two minutes into the contest, giving the four-time world champions an early advantage. The goal appeared to put Germany firmly in control as they sought to complete a perfect group-stage record.

However, Ecuador responded almost immediately. Just seven minutes later, Nilson Angulo equalized with Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament, sparking celebrations among the large Ecuadorian contingent inside MetLife Stadium. The goal ended a frustrating run in which Ecuador had failed to score in their previous two group matches.

The second half produced further drama. Germany were initially awarded a penalty that could have restored their lead, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review after officials detected a foul earlier in the build-up. The reversal proved pivotal in the outcome of the match.

With 13 minutes remaining, Ecuador delivered the decisive blow. Following a corner kick, forward Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest inside the penalty area and poked the ball past German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to complete the comeback and send Ecuadorian supporters into wild celebrations.

The result lifted Ecuador to four points and guaranteed their progression as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the expanded 48-team World Cup format. It marks only the second time Ecuador has reached the knockout stage of a World Cup, with their previous appearance coming in 2006.

Despite the defeat, Germany still finished top of Group E after winning their opening two matches against Curaçao and Ivory Coast. Coach Julian Nagelsmann had already secured qualification before the Ecuador clash and rotated parts of his squad, although the result exposed defensive vulnerabilities ahead of the knockout rounds.

Football analysts described the outcome as one of the most significant surprises of the tournament so far. Ecuador entered the match with only one point from two games and needed a positive result to have any realistic chance of advancing. Their victory not only secured qualification but also demonstrated the growing competitiveness of South American teams on the global stage.

As celebrations continued among Ecuador’s players and supporters, attention quickly shifted to the knockout phase, where the team will attempt to build on one of the most memorable victories in its football history. Germany, meanwhile, will look to regroup as it prepares for a Round of 32 encounter despite suffering its first defeat of the tournament.
