EDO STATE GOVERNMENT TAKES DECISIVE STEP TO ADDRESS FLOODING
The Edo State Government has commissioned a team of environmental and hydrology experts to understudy the acclaimed flood control strategy implemented in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. This initiative, announced by Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Fred Itua, in a statement, underscores the government’s pragmatic approach to governance.

Fred Itua said the move is part of Governor Okpebholo’s determination to tackle the perennial flooding challenges confronting Edo State, particularly in Benin City. “The Akwa Ibom and Rivers States’ models, widely acknowledged for transforming some of Nigeria’s most flood-prone areas into States with efficient flood management systems, stand as credible blueprints for what is possible in Edo State,” Itua explained.

The experts will conduct comprehensive feasibility studies and environmental assessments to design a permanent and sustainable solution to Benin City’s flood problem. Their findings and recommendations will be submitted to Governor Okpebholo for thorough evaluation and subsequent implementation.
According to the statement, private and commercial houses built along waterways will be demolished to pave the way for proper surface and underground drainages, especially in Government Reservation Areas in Benin City. Property owners with verified documents will be compensated, while others will be relocated to safe areas.

Fred Itua further disclosed that Governor Okpebholo’s bold multifaceted flood control project will commence after the heavy rains and will be completed in no distant time. “The Government is committed to ensuring that this process is neither cosmetic nor politicized but rather driven by empirical data and genuine concern for the safety and wellbeing of Edo residents,” he added.
The government has pledged zero tolerance for corruption or cosmetic solutions, ensuring every kobo earmarked for the projects is accounted for and directed solely toward its intended purpose – protecting lives, properties, and the environment. Governor Okpebholo remains committed to making Benin City and its environs more resilient, livable, and economically viable.
