EFCC Clarifies UUTH Incident, Orders Probe into Alleged Misconduct
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has clarified circumstances surrounding the recent incident involving its operatives and staff of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, insisting that its officials were at the hospital strictly for administrative purposes.
According to the Commission, operatives from its Uyo Zonal Directorate visited the hospital on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to authenticate a document and not to carry out any arrest operation as alleged in some reports.
In a statement issued by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency also denied claims that hospital staff who accompanied the operatives to the zonal office were detained.
The Commission described allegations of brutality against members of staff of the hospital as disturbing, noting, however, that no physical evidence of bodily harm had been presented so far.
The EFCC disclosed that it has ordered a full investigation into the incident and assured the public that any operative found to have violated the agency’s Standard Operating Procedures would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
The Commission also appreciated stakeholders and members of the public who expressed concern over the development, while reassuring medical personnel at the hospital that the matter was an isolated incident.
According to the agency, the situation should not be used to undermine ongoing efforts in the fight against corruption in the country.
The EFCC further reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out its mandate in line with the law and with full respect for the rights of all Nigerians.
