Former president of the French Football Federation, Jean-Pierre Escalettes, has died at the age of 90, the federation confirmed in an official statement on Tuesday.

Escalettes, who led French football’s governing body from 2005 to 2010, was widely regarded as a devoted and influential figure in the sport. During his tenure, France reached the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup and successfully secured hosting rights for UEFA Euro 2016.

In its tribute, the federation described him as a man who dedicated his life to football with “passion, humanity, and loyalty,” highlighting his long-standing service to the game at various levels; from player and coach to top administrator.

However, his time in office was not without controversy. Escalettes’ presidency coincided with the infamous 2010 World Cup campaign, during which French players staged a strike in protest following the expulsion of striker Nicolas Anelka. The fallout from the incident led to France’s early exit from the tournament and ultimately prompted Escalettes’ resignation later that year.

Before rising to the presidency, Escalettes had built a long career within French football administration, earning respect for his steady leadership and commitment to the development of the sport.

His death marks the passing of a key figure in modern French football history, remembered both for major achievements and challenging moments during his leadership.
