From Baby Bath to World Cup Final: UNICEF Reunites Messi and Yamal’s Incredible Story
As anticipation builds for Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, UNICEF has brought back one of football’s most remarkable photographs; a 2007 image showing a young Lionel Messi bathing a five-month-old Lamine Yamal during a charity photoshoot, creating a powerful reminder of how two generations of football stars are now set to meet on the sport’s biggest stage.
The image, which has captivated football fans worldwide, was taken nearly two decades ago as part of a charity calendar organized by UNICEF, the FC Barcelona Foundation, and Spanish newspaper Diario Sport. Families from Mataró, near Barcelona, entered a raffle to participate, and Yamal’s family was randomly paired with Messi, who was then a 20-year-old rising Barcelona star. The photoshoot took place in the dressing room at Camp Nou, where photographer Joan Monfort captured Messi carefully holding and bathing the infant Yamal.
At the time, neither Messi nor anyone else could have imagined the extraordinary significance the image would one day hold. Nearly 19 years later, Messi; widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players, and Yamal, Spain’s teenage sensation, are preparing to face each other in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
UNICEF revived the photograph as part of a feature highlighting not only the remarkable coincidence but also the players’ shared commitment to children’s welfare.
Messi has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for more than a decade, using his global profile to advocate for children’s rights around the world. Earlier this year, Yamal also became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, focusing on promoting every child’s right to play and helping young people access safe spaces for recreation and development.
In announcing Yamal’s appointment, UNICEF quoted the young Spanish star as saying:
“Growing up, all I had was a family, a ball, a park and a dream. Playing football gave me structure, a sense of belonging and hope for the future.”
The resurfaced image has come to symbolize what many football observers see as a passing of the torch.
Messi, 39, is preparing for what could be his final World Cup appearance, while 19-year-old Yamal has emerged as one of the brightest talents in world football. Their meeting in the final has been described by many fans and commentators as one of football’s most poetic moments, linking two eras through a photograph that remained largely forgotten until it went viral during the 2024 European Championship.
The story has sparked widespread discussion across social media, with supporters calling it one of the most extraordinary coincidences in football history. Many have described the image as “destiny” or “the photo that predicted the World Cup final,” reflecting the emotional significance attached to the encounter.
Beyond its sporting significance, UNICEF says the photograph now represents the power of hope, opportunity and childhood dreams.
The organization noted that the same charity initiative which once paired an unknown baby with a young footballer has become an enduring reminder of how sport can inspire future generations and unite people across cultures.
When Argentina and Spain meet in the World Cup final, the match will not only determine the next world champion but will also complete an extraordinary journey that began with a simple UNICEF charity photoshoot nearly two decades ago, a story few could have imagined, but millions around the world are now celebrating.
