HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES SWEAR IN THREE NEW LAWMAKERS FOLLOWING AUGUST BYE-ELECTIONS
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, administered the oath of office to three newly elected members of the Green Chamber on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, marking a significant step as they join legislative duties in the lower chamber. The inaugurated lawmakers are Omosede Igbinedion representing Ovia South/Ovia West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency of Edo State, Joseph Bagudu from Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, and Mukhtar Rabiu representing Garki/Babura Federal Constituency in Jigawa State.

These three are among five victors in the August 16, 2025, bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), filling vacancies left by deaths of four serving members — Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Isa Dogonyaro (Jigawa), Olaide Akinremi (Oyo), and Oriyomi Onanuga (Ogun) — and one seat vacant due to Dennis Idahosa becoming deputy governorship candidate alongside Senator Monday Okpebholo in Edo’s 2024 gubernatorial race.
“Their swearing-in signifies our commitment to ensuring representation continues unhindered in the House as we tackle legislative priorities affecting Nigerians,” Speaker Abbas remarked during the ceremony, welcoming the trio into the chamber’s fold.
Party-wise, the All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of the five seats, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) securing one. Notably, two successful candidates — Elegbeji Ayola (Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State) and Oyekunle Sunday (Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Oyo State) — did not attend Tuesday’s ceremony, with no official explanation provided for their absence.
Speaker Abbas praised the electoral process, noting the House’s readiness to tackle national issues with renewed representation. “We look forward to their contributions as we pursue outcomes serving Nigeria’s development interests,” he said.
The event underscores the House’s resumption of plenary activities, integrating the new members into ongoing legislative workings as they join colleagues in addressing national priorities.
