French President Emmanuel Macron is set to make an official visit to Syria in what is expected to be a major diplomatic milestone, the Syrian presidency announced on Sunday. The visit will focus on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation, and addressing key regional and international issues, although no official date has yet been disclosed.

According to a statement from the Syrian Presidency’s Media Directorate, Macron will travel to Damascus accompanied by a delegation of French investors and representatives from major French companies. During the visit, he is expected to hold a high-level roundtable meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and senior Syrian officials to discuss political, economic, and security cooperation.

The planned trip marks a significant step in the rapid normalization of relations between France and Syria following the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. If it goes ahead as planned, Macron will become the first Western European head of state to visit Syria since the country’s political transition, highlighting Europe’s growing engagement with the new Syrian leadership.

Diplomatic ties between Paris and Damascus have steadily improved over the past year. In May 2025, Macron hosted President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Paris; the Syrian leader’s first official visit to a European country, where both sides pledged to strengthen cooperation and support Syria’s reconstruction and political transition. The upcoming visit is widely viewed as a continuation of that diplomatic opening.

Economic cooperation is expected to feature prominently during the discussions. French business leaders accompanying Macron are likely to explore investment opportunities in infrastructure, energy, transport, telecommunications, and reconstruction projects as Syria seeks international partners to rebuild after more than a decade of conflict.

Regional security will also be high on the agenda. The visit comes just days after a deadly bombing in central Damascus that killed several people, underscoring the continuing threat posed by extremist groups despite Syria’s ongoing political transition. Officials are expected to discuss counterterrorism cooperation, border security, refugee returns, and stability in neighboring Lebanon and the wider Middle East.

Analysts say Macron’s visit reflects France’s broader strategy of re-engaging with Syria while encouraging political reforms, regional stability, and economic recovery. Paris has positioned itself as one of the leading European supporters of Syria’s post-conflict transition, and the visit could encourage other European governments to deepen their own diplomatic and economic engagement with Damascus.

Although the Syrian presidency has confirmed the visit, it has not announced an exact date or released a detailed itinerary. Nevertheless, the planned trip is already being viewed as one of the most significant diplomatic developments in Franco-Syrian relations in decades and could reshape Europe’s relationship with Syria’s new government.
