The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed its strategic airlift capabilities to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with the transportation of sensitive electoral materials ahead of the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election and other legislative by-elections scheduled for June 20.
The operation, conducted between June 15 and 16, was carried out following a request from INEC for assistance in ensuring the safe, secure and timely movement of critical election materials to various locations.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed in a statement that the exercise was part of the Service’s continued support for democratic institutions and national assignments.
The airlift operation covered the Ekiti governorship election as well as senatorial by-elections in Enugu North Senatorial District of Enugu State, Nasarawa North Senatorial District of Nasarawa State and Rivers South East Senatorial District of Rivers State.
The Service also transported materials for federal constituency by-elections in Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State and Zuru/Shanga Federal Constituency of Kebbi State.
The sensitive materials were moved from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to designated airports in Enugu, Rivers and Kano States, ensuring their delivery within the timeframe required by INEC.
Air Commodore Ejodame said the successful mission reflected the NAF’s commitment to providing timely support to civil authorities and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, praised the professionalism and dedication of personnel involved in the operation, describing the mission as evidence of the Service’s versatility and readiness to contribute to national development.
He reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with INEC and other government institutions while continuing its core responsibility of defending the nation.
The Air Force said the operation demonstrated the role of air power beyond military engagements, highlighting its capacity to support critical national activities, including election logistics and other civil operations.
