Former NBA center Jason Collins, widely recognized as the first openly gay active player in the NBA and in major American professional team sports, has died at the age of 47 following a battle with brain cancer.

According to reports from multiple international media outlets, Collins died after an eight-month fight with Stage 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. His family confirmed his passing in a statement released Tuesday, describing him as an inspiration whose courage impacted lives far beyond basketball.

Collins made history in 2013 when he publicly came out as gay in a groundbreaking essay published by Sports Illustrated while still an active NBA player. The announcement marked a major moment for LGBTQ+ representation in professional sports and drew widespread support from athletes, fans, and political leaders, including former U.S. President Barack Obama.

During his 13-year NBA career, Collins played for several teams, including the Brooklyn Nets, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, and Washington Wizards. Known more for his defensive abilities and leadership than scoring, Collins earned respect across the league as a dependable veteran presence.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver paid tribute to Collins, praising his role in making basketball and the wider sports community more inclusive and welcoming for future generations. Tributes also poured in from former teammates, coaches, and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, many describing Collins as a pioneer whose influence extended beyond the court.

Collins had publicly revealed his diagnosis in late 2025 and underwent treatment while continuing advocacy and public appearances. Just days before his death, he was honored with the inaugural Bill Walton Global Champion Award for his humanitarian work and impact on sports culture.
