A 23-year-old Nigerian graduate, Oluwalayomi “Layo” Fadero, has tragically lost her life in a fatal road accident in Nashville, after a fleeing suspect driving against traffic crashed into her vehicle.

The incident occurred on Murfreesboro Pike when a 52-year-old man, identified as Ray Eugene Padgett, allegedly sped off in a stolen Ford F-250 truck while attempting to evade police. Authorities said the suspect drove in the wrong direction before colliding head-on with Fadero’s car.

Fadero, a recent graduate of Fisk University, was reportedly approaching her neighbourhood when the crash happened. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that Padgett has been taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including criminally negligent homicide, vehicular homicide by recklessness, and reckless endangerment. He was said to be on parole at the time of the incident, with a history of prior convictions.

The tragic death has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian community in the United States, with tributes pouring in for the young graduate described as promising and full of life.

Meanwhile, a fundraising initiative set up to support her burial has raised over $13,000, reflecting the widespread grief and solidarity among friends, family, and well-wishers.

The incident has also reignited concerns over the dangers associated with high-speed police pursuits and reckless driving on major highways in the United States.
