Rubio Heads to NATO Talks as Trump Expands US Military Presence in Poland

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to deploy an additional 5,000 American troops to Poland, a move that comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with NATO allies in Sweden amid growing tensions over Washington’s military strategy in Europe.

Trump said the decision followed the election victory of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom he publicly endorsed. The announcement marks a sharp shift after recent signals from the Trump administration suggesting reductions in the US military footprint across Europe.

The deployment has created confusion among NATO partners because the Pentagon had earlier paused the planned rotation of thousands of troops to Poland as part of broader force reductions in Europe. Reports indicated that around 4,000 US troops scheduled for deployment had their mission temporarily halted.

Speaking ahead of a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Sweden, Rubio attempted to reassure allies about Washington’s commitment to the alliance. However, he also criticized some European countries for refusing the United States access to military bases during recent operations linked to tensions with Iran.

The troop announcement comes at a delicate moment for NATO as European governments express concern about inconsistent US defense policies and the possibility of further troop withdrawals from the continent. NATO officials have reportedly been seeking clearer assurances from Washington regarding long-term military commitments to Europe.

Polish officials welcomed Trump’s pledge, describing Poland as one of America’s strongest allies in Europe. The additional troops are expected to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank at a time of heightened security concerns linked to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
