The Senate on Wednesday expanded its membership with the swearing-in of four newly elected senators who won recent bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill vacant seats in the National Assembly.

The lawmakers took their oaths of office during plenary presided over by Senate President, , after presenting their Certificates of Return issued by INEC.

The newly inaugurated senators are of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District; of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Enugu North Senatorial District; of the APC, representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District; and of the APC, representing Ondo South Senatorial District.

The brief but significant ceremony marked the official return of full legislative representation to the affected constituencies following vacancies that arose in the Senate.

Akpabio congratulated the lawmakers on their successful elections and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by their constituents through quality representation and active participation in legislative activities.

The Senate President also emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in advancing laws and policies aimed at promoting national development and strengthening democratic governance.

The bye-elections that produced the new senators were organized by INEC to fill seats left vacant by the death of serving lawmakers and the resignation of a senator who accepted a diplomatic appointment.

With their inauguration, the Senate has restored representation for the people of Rivers South-East, Enugu North, Nasarawa North and Ondo South, ensuring that the interests of the affected districts are fully represented in the upper chamber.

The development further reshapes the composition of the 10th Senate, with the ruling APC securing three of the four seats contested in the bye-elections, while the PDP retained one seat.

The newly inaugurated lawmakers are expected to be assigned committee responsibilities in the coming weeks as they settle into their legislative duties.
