The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has dismissed national team head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw following the country’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure less than two years after taking charge of the Lions of Teranga. The decision was announced after an executive committee meeting in Dakar, where federation officials concluded that a change in leadership was necessary following Senegal’s early elimination from the tournament.

In an official statement, the federation confirmed that it had initiated the process to terminate the contracts of Thiaw and his entire coaching staff after reviewing the team’s performances and future prospects. The FSF said the move was made “in the best interests of Senegalese football” and added that federation president Abdoulaye Fall will address the media to explain the decision and outline plans for reorganizing the national teams.

Senegal entered the World Cup with high expectations after winning the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year and being widely tipped as one of Africa’s strongest contenders. However, the campaign quickly unraveled. The Lions lost their opening two group-stage matches against France and Norway before keeping their hopes alive with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Iraq, which allowed them to advance as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Their tournament ultimately ended in heartbreaking fashion in the Round of 32 against Belgium. Senegal appeared to be cruising into the last 16 after establishing a 2-0 lead with only minutes remaining in regulation time. However, Belgium staged a dramatic comeback, scoring twice late in the match before converting a stoppage-time penalty in extra time to secure a stunning 3-2 victory, one of the tournament’s most dramatic turnarounds.

Thiaw’s departure also follows a turbulent period off the pitch. The 45-year-old coach was reportedly facing a five-match suspension beginning in September over his role in leading a player walk-off during the Africa Cup of Nations final in protest against a controversial refereeing decision. The incident added to growing scrutiny surrounding his leadership despite the team’s continental success earlier in the year.

Attention has already turned to who could replace Thiaw. Multiple reports have identified former France World Cup winner Patrick Vieira, who was born in Dakar, as one of the leading candidates. Vieira, a former manager of Crystal Palace, Nice, Strasbourg, and Genoa, is currently without a club and is believed to be highly regarded by several officials within the Senegalese federation.

The decision has generated mixed reactions among supporters and football analysts. While many acknowledged that Senegal underperformed at the World Cup, others argued that Thiaw deserved more time after guiding the country to continental glory earlier in the year. Discussions have also focused on broader issues within the federation, including administrative challenges and preparations leading up to the tournament.

With qualification campaigns for future international tournaments approaching, the FSF is expected to move quickly in appointing a new manager capable of restoring confidence and maximizing the potential of one of Africa’s most talented squads. The next coach will inherit a team featuring experienced stars and emerging young talent but will also face the immediate challenge of rebuilding morale after one of Senegal’s most painful World Cup exits in recent memory.
