Manchester City’s pursuit of the Premier League title suffered a significant setback on Monday after they were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw by Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium, a result that has handed the initiative to league leaders Arsenal.

In a match filled with breathtaking twists, Jeremy Doku gave City the lead with a sublime strike just before halftime. However, the second half descended into chaos for Pep Guardiola’s side as Everton produced a stunning comeback. A defensive error from City’s Marc Guehi allowed substitute Thierno Barry to equalize, and moments later, Jake O’Brien rose highest to head Everton into a 2-1 lead. Barry then completed his brace in the 81st minute, making it 3-1 and leaving the visitors stunned.

Just as victory seemed certain for the hosts, City showed their trademark resilience. Erling Haaland pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute before Doku curled in a spectacular equalizer deep into the seventh minute of stoppage time to salvage a point for the visitors.

The draw leaves Manchester City five points behind Arsenal, who currently sit top of the table. While City do have a game in hand, the destiny of the title is no longer in their own hands. A visibly frustrated Guardiola conceded the shift in momentum after the final whistle. “It was in our hands, in Arsenal’s hands as well before that game… Now it’s not,” Guardiola admitted. “We have to win our games. Now it’s not in our hands, if they win all the games, the title will be for Arsenal”.

For Everton manager David Moyes, the late equalizer was a bitter pill to swallow in his side’s quest for European football. The draw keeps their hopes alive, but the manner of dropping two points in the dying seconds was a source of immense frustration. “It’ll be tough for us to make Europe, I think, at the moment. Three points tonight might have made me start talking or feeling a bit more healthier about it,” Moyes told reporters. “Getting one keeps me still dreaming, there’s a chance. But I’ve been talking too much all season about it, so I’m fed up talking about it now”.

Everton hero Thierno Barry, who scored twice off the bench, expressed disappointment despite his personal success. “It’s always a pleasure to play against a big team like Manchester City. I’m very happy to come on and score two goals,” Barry said. “In the end, we had to settle for a draw so we need to keep pushing because there are three games left”.

With Arsenal facing a crucial clash against West Ham United and City preparing to host Brentford, the title race remains alive, but the pressure has now firmly shifted onto Guardiola’s champions to keep pace.
