United Kingdom-backed mobile operator, Lebara, has formally entered Nigeria’s telecommunications market with the rollout of its 0724 number series, marking a fresh phase of competition in Africa’s largest telecom economy.

The company unveiled the new number range at a private industry event in Lagos attended by regulators, investors and members of the United Kingdom business community.

Lebara’s entry positions it as a value-driven service provider targeting Nigeria’s vast and youthful subscriber base, with a focus on affordable voice and data services.

Operating Under MVNO Model

Lebara is operating under a Tier Five Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) licence issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). As an MVNO, the company does not own physical telecom infrastructure but instead leases network capacity from existing operators to deliver services to customers.

In line with this model, Lebara has secured an infrastructure partnership with Airtel Nigeria, enabling it to provide nationwide coverage from launch.

The company also confirmed it has completed full interconnection agreements with other major operators, ensuring seamless voice calls and data services across networks once commercial operations begin.

0724 Number Series Activated

According to the company, the 0724 number series has been fully activated and integrated into Nigeria’s national numbering plan. This allows subscribers using the new range to connect without restrictions across all mobile networks in the country.

Industry analysts say the introduction of a new number range signals regulatory confidence in expanding competition through alternative service models, particularly as Nigeria’s telecom market continues to mature.

Focus on Affordable and International Services

Lebara stated that its Nigerian operations will prioritize affordable voice and data packages, with special emphasis on international calling services. The strategy is expected to appeal to Nigerians with family, education and business ties abroad.

Drawing on its experience across Europe and other global markets, the company said it intends to tailor its offerings to meet local consumer needs while maintaining competitive pricing.

Plans Beyond Traditional Telecoms

Beyond core telecom services, Lebara disclosed plans to expand into digital financial solutions, including device financing and small-value consumer products. It also signaled interest in supporting Nigeria’s creative and technology communities through connectivity-driven initiatives.

Growing Competition in Nigeria’s Telecom Sector

Lebara’s market entry comes at a time when the NCC is encouraging innovative service models to deepen competition, enhance service quality and widen consumer choice.

With dominant operators already controlling a significant share of subscribers, analysts believe MVNOs could introduce pricing flexibility and niche-focused products that challenge traditional market dynamics.

As commercial rollout begins, industry watchers will be monitoring how quickly Lebara can capture market share in a sector long dominated by established telecom giants.
